Abstract
Background: The intrauterine infection caused by Parvovirus B 19 may be the reason for many complications such as spontaneous abortion, intrauterine fetal death, generalized nonimmunologic hydrops fetalis and intrauterine growth retardation. The aim of our study is to present our own experience in diagnostics and management of nonimmunologic hydrops fetalis caused by parvovirus B 19 infection.
Material/Methods:Five pregnant women with hydropic fetuses, infected with Parvovirus B 19 were included in the study. In all of the studied cases the infection was confirmed by detection of IgM antibodies or by rise in IgG antibodies level in serum using ELISA assay. The symptoms of hydrops fetalis were revealed during a control ultrasound scan, and intrauterine treatment was performed immediately.
Conclusions: It seems that the success of pregnancy depends on the length of time between the infection and the moment when the first clinical symptoms are noticed.
